Your home’s plumbing system will eventually cause problems for you. These five problems are common among systems in homes. Learning to spot them early can help you call in a professional or take on the repair yourself before the problem gets worse or causes damage to your home.

Blocked Drain
A blocked drain, usually in a sink, occurs when buildup of food, grease, hair, or other grime stops the flow of water. This is one plumbing problem you can likely fix on your own. A sink plunger often dislodges the clog. If this does not work, you can use a commercial drain cleaner, or you can manually remove the drain trap and clean out the pipes.

Blocked Toilet
A blocked toilet can send nasty sewage into your home as the toilet overflows. Since this problem usually shows up when the toilet is flushed, it’s almost always a nasty one. The best way to deal with it is to turn off the water supply to the toilet as soon as you notice the problem. The toilet should have a shutoff valve near the back towards the floor. Then, use a plunger or metal snake to dislodge the blockage. If you regularly have this plumbing issue, call a plumber to figure out why your toilet is not flushing as it should.

Problems With the Garbage Disposal
If your garbage disposal does not work, you likely have food stuck in it. The unit probably came with a key wrench. Use this to loosen the blockage. Simply place it on the correct point at the bottom of the disposal, and then turn the key counterclockwise until it can move again. Before using the disposal, run it while cold water runs down the drain. This will chop up any remaining food particles.

Leaky Faucet
Often faucets start to leak because the washer inside the unit needs to be replaced. To do this, turn off the water, and then remove the cover of the faucet. Remove the handle, and you will see the washer inside. Replace it, put the unit together again, and check for leaks. If your faucet still leaks, tighten the handle.

Leaking Pipe
A leaking pipe is the most common type of plumbing problem that you may need professional help to repair. The first step is locating the actual leak. If you can find and fix the leak on your own without extensive repair to the pipe or the need to solder, feel free to try. However, if the leak is difficult to find, requires soldering, or looks complex to fix, you may be better off calling a plumber.

So the next time you notice a plumbing problem in your home, decide if you have one of these five problems. If so, consider whether you feel comfortable fixing it on your own, or whether your family would be better served by hiring a professional plumber to do the job.

The kitchen is one of the most used rooms in a house. It’s a place for preparing and cooking meals and therefore a gathering place for the family. After spending so much time in a room, it’s easy to start noticing its flaws. But sometimes a complete kitchen redesign just isn’t in the budget. Fortunately, there are simple things that you can do to breathe some life into the kitchen without emptying your wallet.

One of the easiest things you can do to update your kitchen is to change out cabinet hardware. Perhaps your old faded brass hardware is playing a huge part in making your kitchen look old and outdated. You can pick up new hardware at any home improvement store and give your kitchen a new look within minutes. And it will only cost you a few bucks. Another great way is to paint. A new coat of paint can brighten up cabinets and it can add some spice to the whole room as well. However, if you prefer the wood grain of your cabinets but they are old and look it, you don’t have to have new cabinetry put in. There are a couple options. You can reface the cabinetry or change out the doors. Consult with a trusted kitchen remodel company to discuss either of these options. Your appliances are also an important part of the look of your kitchen. If your appliances are making your kitchen look drab, you might consider re-facing a refrigerator or a dishwasher. Many appliances are designed with panels that can be replaced for a few hundred dollars. Any of these steps will be quick, easy, and cheap.

A person has a ton of options to choose from when designing or remodeling a home kitchen. From the floor to the ceiling, every part of a kitchen has a hundred different ways it can be done. Starting at the floor, people may choose to stain concrete, lay tile or wood, or even use carpet. Whichever one someone chooses it opens the door for many other options, like what color stain and sealer, what kind of tile: granite, ceramic, marble, vinyl, or what size of tile and what design to lay it in? Does a person want hardwood floors or laminate wood and in what color? That is just the flooring options.

Then, a person still has to decide on cabinets, such as granite, corian, or butcher block. Next come countertops, appliances, backsplashes, and whether to paint or put up wall paper? Yes, undertaking a kitchen can be a serious, stressful, and maybe even disastrous project if someone is not prepared. Preparation is the key between having a happy kitchen remodel a person is pleased with and having one that isn’t so nice!

One of the things to start doing before a person starts buying things is to spend some time looking at other kitchens for ideas that the person likes, as well as things they don’t like. Then, it might be good to keep a binder with photos, notes, and samples of the things that appeal to them. This way when a person finally is ready to start purchasing things, they have a solid idea of what is for them.

Also, it is good to set a budget and stick to it. If someone likes an item that is too expensive for their budget, they can shop around and try to find something comparable to the look, but is cheaper. For example, a person should not set a budget of say twenty-five thousand dollars and then just start spending until they run out of money. A person would be wise to set up how much they want to spend on cabinets. Then, decide how much they are willing to spend on floor, etc. This way a person doesn’t spend twenty thousand on cabinets and not have enough to finish anything else.

Let me share with you my experiences with a home safe. When I was first married over twenty years ago I didn’t think about things like home safes, securing important papers and valuables, or anything else even closely related. I just concerned myself with life’s more basic distractions, like working, eating, sleeping, and maybe catching a movie every once in a while. As I got older things started to change. Before I knew it I got to the point where I felt the need to secure a few things.

When I think about it, these early feelings about security probably started when we began having children. I had an innate sense of what to do to protect my valuable babies, so it wasn’t much of a leap for me to start feeling protective of other things in my life that I valued. The first thing I had that could probably pass as a home safe was a little lock box. It was metal and had a simple single lock. It didn’t hold much, wasn’t fire or water proof, but did allow me to put a few things inside that I wanted to protect from simple theft. I guess it never dawned on me that a would be thief could just walk off with it. Silly me.

Before too long, my notion of what a home safe was started to change. I found a Sentry safe that was small enough to be portable, yet had some of the basic protections I really needed. It could withstand the devastating effects of a blaze for enough time for the average fire department to respond, about 30 minutes. It had a pretty secure feeling lock, and it was big enough to store some extra cash, my passport, and a few other important documents and valuables.

Having a small home safe was great, and still is for many reasons. However, what I soon learned was that it just wasn’t adequate enough for some of the other valuables that I really wanted to protect. My main concern was being able to safely store my handgun. I needed a secure safe to put it in so the kids could not come into jeopardy, but I also needed something that was extremely easy to access in times of need. What I found was a bio-safe that was keyed with my own hand. I would recommend one of these to anyone with a pistol. All you do to open the safe is to insert your hand onto the pad that reads your unique bio-metrix. Through the magic of modern technology, the safe will recognize you as the owner and allow you access.

Before long, more kids had come along and the number of valuables we had acquired, and wanted to secure, had started to accumulate. We decided that a larger home safe would be in order. We found one that we installed in a closet by bolting it to the floor from the inside of the safe. This was pretty secure, and gave us a place to store not only important valuables, but larger items as well.

A home safe can give a lot of peace of mind if it is the right one. As your need for protection grows, the size of the safe you need grows as well.

Many people buy a wall or other type of safe for home or business use, never anticipating that it could need to be serviced or repaired by a professional safe locksmith. But just like any other kind of security equipment, safes can and do break down.

When there is money, jewelry or important documents in the safe, it is crucial to choose a trained, professional locksmith. An experienced technician can thoroughly size up the situation and perform the needed services, from opening safes to changing the combination.

Although films may feature criminals who seem to be easily able to crack safes, it is not nearly as simple to truly open a safe in real life. It can take years of training to learn the right techniques and know what type of tools will open a safe without causing permanent damage to it. With the right training, a locksmith may also be able to open some safes by gently moving the combination locks and carefully listening and feeling the subtle changes that help open the lock.

In other cases, a locksmith can open a safe by drilling into it but this is not a job for an untrained person. Only the fully experienced locksmith understands where to find the drill points for each specific type of safe. This information is not shared with the general public.

That’s why it is important to have a locksmith open a safe if it is jammed or the combination no longer works. Home or business owners who try to force open a safe can cause permanent damage to it.

The professional safe locksmith will also know how to service all sorts of safes, including antique and commercial safes as well as bank vaults or jewelers safes. Each type requires special techniques and it can take years of hands on training in the field to become a pro. Only a quality safe opening service should be used, especially since antique safes can be valuable even before anything is put in them. They can be collectors’ items, in some cases worth thousands of dollars.

To maintain a safe and help prevent problems, regular maintenance is always highly recommended. Annual cleaning and lubricating of the parts of a safe are very important to keep it in the best possible condition (sometimes it is best to clean and lubricate the safe even more often).

Again, this is not something for the average person to do. Antique safes can be ruined by using improper cleaning or lubricating solutions which can hurt the interior and exterior of the safe as well as the inner workings. This could greatly lessen the value of the safe itself and also affect its use.

What about safes which have been inherited or bought at auction where the combination is lost or was not written down? Again, a well-trained locksmith can either figure out the combination or safely drill into the safe so that only a tiny hole is made. After that, it can often be possible to reset or put in a new lock with a combination that works.

From opening a broken or jammed safe to regular servicing, lubricating and repairs, a locksmith service is the best choice. The pros can also save valuable time and energy while ensuring that a safe maintains its value and provides security for years to come.

For those who are looking to get into the property market at less cost, finding renovation houses for sale might be the answer. Homes that need a lot of tender loving care are usually at the cheaper end of the market due to the cost of the repairs needed. Many bargain homes can be found in this way. They may not need extensive repairs, but they look really bad on the outside.

Curb appeal is a big selling point, but rundown houses for sale do not have curb appeal, therefore they are most likely to sell for a great deal less than a home that has been well-maintained. It may be that they only need repainting, but paint that is cracked and peeling often leads to mouldy walls and many people who look at cheap houses for sale are turned off by the amount of work involved in repainting.

However, the home handyman knows that with a little bit of elbow grease and motivation, old house renovations can be completed in next to no time, leaving him with a valuable asset. Smaller homes also fall into this category. When looking for cheap houses for sale, go for the smaller home. A smaller home is always cheaper than a large home, but for not much additional expense house extensions can add a great deal of floor space, increasing its value by a great deal.

Improving real estate in this way is a good way to get into the real estate market and many handymen have found it an enjoyable and satisfying way to invest their money. For convenience, you can use your computer as a property finder. There are many websites that deal in real estate and some deal exclusively with bargain homes and rundown houses for sale.

Real estate agents are also in the know and will help you to find that bargain home that needs to be renovated. Once the work is done it can be sold at a profit – if you can bear to part with it.

The only part of a suspended ceiling system that you can see is the tiles. As such, it is desirable that they are attractive in their appearance. As well as aesthetic qualities, there are other considerations you must bear in mind before selecting a suspended ceiling tile; hygiene, acoustic properties, fire resistance among others.

Obviously in a bacteria sensitive environment such as a hospital or medical laboratory, you are going to want a tile which is likely to harbour and produce the least possible number of germs and bacteria.

There are ceiling tiles which can actually break down harmful airborne substances into non-critical parts. These tiles reduce uncomfortable and health threatening emissions from construction materials, cleaning agents, cosmetics, foods and cigarettes.

As part of the manufacturing process of ceiling tiles there will inevitably be some residue or dust present on some of the tiles. Tiles designed for healthcare environments have been specifically designed not to release any of these micro-particles.

Tiles have also been developed, by an anti-microbial treatment to resist against bacteria and fungi.

Certain applications require suspended ceiling tiles to have some sort of acoustic property. Whether that be sound absorption, sound attenuation or sound reflection. Again, ranges of ceiling tiles have been created to fill this need so whether you just want to prevent your noise disturbing your neighbours or you are trying to make presentations in a large auditorium more easily heard by those at the back, there is a tile for your needs.

Fire can devastate a building and there are strict regulations which you must conform to in commercial, business and residential premises so it is important, if you have a suspended ceiling, that it conforms to these standards to avoid fines and more importantly avoid any fire risks.

Again, fire resistant ceiling tiles have been developed to adhere to these standards and minimise the fire risk with tiles having been tested and certified for up to 60 minutes fire resistance under steel beams and timber joists.

It’s now high time to switch on to awareness of upcoming new residential lighting energy efficiency standards, and their impact for homeowners due to progressive federal and local energy codes and green building programs. If you’re still in the dark about CFLs and LEDs, lumens, CCT and CRI, this article will be of timely help. Consumers may go through a large learning curve with a more complicated selection process, but the brighter long-term news is good for cost savings and our environment.

That’s because the federal Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007 takes effect Jan. 1 2012. The legislation will soon limit the number of watts any light bulb can consume for a given number of lumens, a measure of light output. The luminary output equivalent of today’s 100w incandescent bulb will be allowed to consume only 72w (of course, other size bulbs are affected proportionately). Doing the math, that means incandescent bulbs need to get 28% more efficient. That may occur, but probably at increased cost. Regardless, the long-term outlook for incandescent bulbs is dim.

Familiar and affordable, incandescents have super hot glowing electrified filaments that produce a warm white light. However, they are inefficient, as up to 95% of their energy converts into heat. In fact, incandescent bulbs are now banned in Brazil, and are being phased out in Europe. Used responsibly in the U. S., such as with dimmer switches, they can still provide good overall ambient light. They have an efficacy of between 10 and 20 lumens per watt (lm/w).

Halogen lights are a more refined and (relatively) efficient version of incandescent bulbs, operating at an even higher temperature using tungsten filaments and inert halogen gases. Their crisp white light and concentrated beams are best used for accent and task lighting such as art highlighting and under cabinet lighting. Some types of bulbs are dimmable.

Energy efficient compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) and light emitting diodes (LEDs), now a relatively small segment of the incandescent bulb-dominated lighting market, are about to get a significant boost in use, because they already meet the new EISA standard. Dramatically more efficient, CFLs have an efficacy range of 60 lm/w to 100 lm/w, and LEDs now measure in the range of 70 to 80 lm/w, but are projected to exceed 150 lm/w by 2015.

All light bulbs produce a range of light quality measured as correlated color temperature (CCT), in the spectrum of white light from “warm,” which has a yellow-gold hue, to “cool,” which has a bluish cast. Lower numbers are associated with warmer light and higher temperatures are associated with cooler light. People look best under warmer home lighting of 2700 degrees Kelvin to 3000 degrees K. Incandescent lights have a temperature of about 2700 degrees K, and neutral office fluorescent bulbs have a temperature of around 4100 degrees K. Another measure of light quality is color-rendering index (CRI), how well a color is rendered or shifts under different artificial light sources compared to natural daylight, on a scale of 0 to 100.

Available for nearly 20 years, CFLs have been steadily improved and now have arrived. Electrically excited mercury vapor creates ultraviolet light which causes a phosphor to fluoresce, producing visible light. Ballasts regulate the flow of electrical current. Startup times are improving to the extent that instant-on CFLs will soon become available. New electronic dimmer switches must be compatible with new CFL electronic ballasts, however, light may cut out before dimming all the way down. Otherwise, any CFL used with a dimmer isn’t dangerous, it just won’t dim. Good CFLs have a CRI above 80. Most CFLs provide excellent ambient, accent, and task lighting. Cost of a typical coiled 19w CFL may be $3.50.

An Energy Star qualified CFL bulb should save about $30 over it’s lifetime and pay for itself in about six months because it uses 50-80% less energy and lasts about ten times longer than an incandescent bulb. Initial cost is higher, but don’t buy cheaper house brands using inferior phosphors that create poor CCT hues.

In five to ten years, most light fixtures will house light emitting diode (LED) bulbs, which use glowing computer chips grouped together for illumination, instead of filaments or gas. Electricity regulated by drivers runs through the chips, exciting electrons and producing light. LEDs don’t actually produce white light; it must be created either by combining chip colors or using a phosphor. LEDs produce heat and require thermal management with use of a heat sink, usually aluminum fins. Currently, cost is the biggest factor in LED use, but like computer chips using Moore’s Law, prices should fall by a factor of 10 while performance increases by a factor of 20 over the next decade. Currently, the cost of a screw-in LED recessed can replacement costs about $120. LED standards for CCT and CRI have so far been voluntary, and variable between manufacturers, as has been switching and dimming response, so evaluate these products carefully. Most LEDs are good for directional accent or task lighting.

Both CFLs and LEDs are now available with dedicated fixtures that can lengthen the lifespan of the bulbs and maximize their attributes. However, CFLs, needing time to attain full brightness, are not appropriate where lights will be switched on and off frequently and quickly, reducing bulb lifespan.

Many people consider their homes a sanctuary, somewhere to relax and truly show their personalities. Often your home and interior design choices can say a lot about a person, allowing individuals to make judgements about your character from the style of your home. The home is often the area where people will entertain friends and family, as well as relax and sleep amongst other things, and a chandelier can provide the perfect lighting for any room; here’s how.

Chandeliers are often seen in dining rooms, whether hung low or high they provide a great impact in a room that is often quite theatrical, especially when set up for a dinner party with friends. The choice of a chandelier in this room will not only provide a focal point and often a talking point, but also great lighting to showcase your food and create a warm and intimate atmosphere around the table.

Chandeliers are also perfect for bedroom lighting; a romantic antique French chandelier could create the perfect ambience for a feminine, fresh and romantic room. Whereas an arts and crafts style chrome chandelier could also be perfect for a bedroom, this time adding a simplistic feel whilst also adding a prominent furniture piece to the room.

A chandelier could even be perfect for a bathroom or dressing room. With many miniature versions of chandeliers available of the market now you could find a small crystal chandelier to add elegance and a touch of luxury to a master en suite bathroom, perfect for them moments of pure indulgence. With the crystal allowing the light to refract you can lay back and relax enjoying the shapes made by the dispersed light.

As well as providing a focal point and looking beautiful in any room a chandelier can also provide great lighting. With their many branches they provide bright yet soft lighting, perfect for any room as the lighting it not too bright, yet not too dim. It is also somewhat directional as the lights come off at many tangents spreading the light further around the room due to the length of the many branches, as well as this it is also possible to wire these up to a dimmer switch, allowing for even more variety and flexibility.

So when considering lighting for any room in your home why not consider a chandelier for the many benefits and beauty it can provide. With a huge range of styles, shapes and sizes on the market you can find one to suit your personal style and the interior design of any room. They also come in a range of colours or can even be bespokely made to fit a particular area, such as a large stairwell.

After the long winter, being too zealous about starting up the AC can actually lead to AC problems. Let me let you in on a secret, as a 5-year Denver HVAC mechanic: Refrigerant is not needed unless there is already serious damage to the central heating system. I get called to recharge refrigerators and air conditioning units every spring, but in reality, the refrigerant is in a closed loop and cannot leak unless there is damage to system components. Modern air conditioning appliances should not require maintenance. Regular checking and filling of refrigerant increases the likelihood of refrigerant contamination and therefore further damage down the line.

So one thing the average consumer can do before calling an expensive Denver HVAC service company is to start up the central air unit themselves, checking for any problems. This will outline air conditioner startup and common warning signs that you have a faulty AC part.

First turn off the breakers to both the furnace and central air unit. They should be on separate breakers. For safety, before disassembling or servicing any type of machine that is plugged in, turn the power off.

Remove the cover of the furnace or compressor and vacuum the whole area, making especially sure that there are not foreign parts in the fan blades. Then replace a filter with the same one your Denver HVACSpin the fan with your hand and listen for any cracks or rumbling which may indicate a failed bearing. If you can correctly identify the problem, it can make it much cheaper for a furnace repair company to fix it. Oil the motor and compressor bearings if they have an oil port.

Bearing problems are cheap and easier to fix than replacing an entire compressor.

With the power still off, clean dust and debris from the outdoor unit’s electric wiring. Then spray household cleaner on the coil and rinse it off with a hose. Coils are fragile, but will not work properly if clogged with foreign material.

The compressor in the outside unit is very similar to the furnace blower. Check the outside unit fan the same way, checking for cracks or gaps in the fan and fan housing. Then oil the motor and then you are finished with the outside unit.

Then turn back on the power on a warm day to test the system’s pressure. Listen for strange sounds then let the system run for a while.

Then check all the air vents in your home. Air vents should be open to let the system to run ventilation at rated pressure.

Many closed vents may increase pressure in the open ones, but this is bad for the air conditioner. Sometimes cooling problems are a result of the return vent and not the ac vents.

Next is a visual check of the outside unit. The unit should blow warm air and have two lines coming out of it. The small line should be warm or room temperature and the large one should be cool. If you have a outside thermometer you can check the temperature differential between the intake air and the air blown out of the furnace. The temperature difference on a well maintained Denver air conditioning unit should be around 15 degrees Fahrenheit.
